4 Tips for Consistent Marketing

I’m going to say the dirty word that frustrates a lot of people.

If you want your marketing to convert, you have to stay consistent

That word- consistency- can ruffle some feathers! It’s been twisted into this idea that, in order to be “consistent,” you have to post:

  • every day

  • 3-5 times a day

  • On every platform

  • Nonstop!

Just post post post! LIKE A MANIAC!

Who has the time for that?! You are a small business owner, not a robot or some AI generator.  You have a business to run and a brand to cultivate. Besides, frequency isn’t the same as consistency  and volume most definitely does not guarantee marketing success.

So what exactly is consistency?

What Consistency in Marketing Really Means

I define consistency as showing up on your platform(s) of choice with some regularity so that your audience can reliably expect to see you there and will miss you when you are gone.

Consistency is not only about visibility. Your presence builds trust in the brand. You become a reliable source which speaks to the character of your business.

Showing up consistently allows audiences to begin to bond with you that eventually turns into support- think sales, registrations, clients, etc.

“Ok. we get it. Post consistently! But how do we do that without content becoming a cage of agony?”

Glad you asked! Here are 4 tips for marketing consistency.

Start with One Platform

Being consistent with your marketing does not mean you have to be on every platform.

Start with the one platform that will allow you to reach your audience most effectively. When you focus on one platform, you can:

  • Learn how content works there

  • Nurture real relationships

  • Reduce the overall time and energy spent creating content

Please note I did not say “post on the platform you enjoy the most”

You want to show up where your audience actually is. If you’re talking to the right people in the wrong room you’re wasting your time, money, and enthusiasm on fruitless efforts.

Visualize What Consistency Looks Like For You.

Oftentimes, my clients assume they don’t have enough content to post consistently, but once they visualize it on a calendar, they see the truth and then try to add in too much!

So my recommendation is to start with a calendar.

Whether it’s a physical one or a simple Google sheet, fill in your calendar with notes for when and what you will post. Creating a calendar:

  • Helps with batching your content because you’re planning in advance

  • Aligns your content with promotions, offers, and operational announcements (you can literally see when you need to share what)

  • Opens the door to getting support, because if you’ve laid the groundwork, someone else can help execute from the roadmap you created

It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be clear enough that future you (or a team member) knows what’s supposed to happen.

Follow a content pillar framework

So you picked a platform, you have your calendar… but you still don't know what to post? Try using a content pillar framework.

A content pillar framework gives you a simple way to organize your marketing so you always know what to say. Content for your brand:

  • Speak to the purpose of your business – Why do you exist?

  • Provide insight into your pillars – What do you value as a business?

  • Communicate your promise – What can your audience expect you to deliver?

  • Show your personality – Who are you as a brand?

If your purpose, promise, pillars, and personality are the basis of your content, think of your content pillar framework like lanes on a highway keep you from drifting all over the road. It’s a guide, not a prison.

If you need a content pillar framework to start with, feel free to steal mine: The 4H’s framework.

  • Head- content that educates your audience about the brand or topics related to it

  • Heart- content that generates an emotional connection and communicates your values

  • Hand- content that highlights your supporters, partners, and patrons or others in the industry

  • (H)ear- content that centers feedback, reflections, highlights, and reviews.

The 4H pillar framework helps you organize your content so you always know what to say next, while still leaving room for your personality, seasons, and real life. It allows you to

  • Rotate through different types of content without starting from scratch every week.

  •  Bulk create content with minimal effort.

  • Create a predictable schedule to follow -maybe Heart post every Wednesday and Hand posts on Fridays.

Again, structure without caging you in.

Last but most importantly: Start. Just start.

At some point, we have to talk about the part no framework can do for you: actually starting.

You have to start somewhere. Building consistency is not about being perfect. Even I miss a posting day every once in a while, or forget to maintain my calendar so things fall behind.

That’s life. No scratch that. That’s business.

It is a series of trials, errors, setbacks, and restarts. But you have to:

  • Start

  • Get going

  • Have something to learn from

  • Be open to iterating on the process

Your marketing will only have impact if you’re actually marketing. Not planning to. Not thinking about it. Not beating yourself up for what you “should” be doing.

Just starting. And starting again.

A Little Nudge Before You Go

If you’ve been telling yourself, “I know it’s doable, I just don’t know where to start,” this is your sign you’re ready to start.

If you’d like a thinking partner to map that out, I’m here.

If nothing else, remember your audience doesn’t need you to be everywhere. They just need you to be reliably and recognizably you somewhere.
